In reply to Woopwoop. This study indicates people are happy, but the fact that right-wing populists are attracting such a high percentage of the vote does indicate there is a problem. Inequality is definitely one of the causes of that problem.

Good article Megan. The French, like other European countries and the UK, have to get their heads around no longer making massive income by exploiting colonies. It stopped a long time ago. The dissipation of wealth made during the colonial period is nearly complete. The infrastucture built from the wealth of the colonial past is decaying and not being replaced. The living standards of many Europeans will continue to plummet if they don’t recognise they have to start generating wealth internally. It is going to get messy in Europe.

That was very well depicted or I’m French, our centre went careening off to the right too, we would only dare to be quite left or a communist in this country. Our fences are well patrolled by the good old boys ,a whiff of commie and its on, the baying from the sky after dark would be palpable.
With so much at stake for mining and fossil fuels we may end up with a similar character that has significant influence over the next government.

In reply to Gonggongche. Complicating French politics for me to follow, is what seems (I couldn't say from first hand experience or the like) to be entrenched racism and islamophobia amongst the majority of the population.

Is it really any surprise that Macron and his party wouldn’t deal with the Left Alliance? From what they’ve shown in office, they appear to be just another party serving the wealthy elite and enabling the further concentration of wealth.
