The machines are programmed to hypnotise the losers, who pull their money out so desperately from their pockets that some falls to the floor, unnoticed. So to win, just walk through between drinks and pick it up. The previous owners were always going to put it in the machine anyway, and have no idea how much they have lost.

Don’t be a gambler: play the floor.

You can bet the farm, that if you were looking to find either of the major parties, they’ll be sitting down in front of, playing the “RIVERS of GOLD” machine at their nearest club.

Labor and the Coalition have served the gambling industry and not governed in the interest of Australians. Gambling adds next to nothing to the economy, it takes money out of the system without contributing anything much in return. The arguments that it supports hospitality are overblown, people still went out and partook of hospitality services before the advent of pokies, the idea that there won’t be a need for hospitality workers, and so a loss of employment, doesn’t cut it.

Labor, in particular, have played a terrible part in this crisis, but the bottom line is that the duopoly have known of the problem for decades and done nothing. Julia Gillard, to her everlasting shame, welched on a deal with Andrew Wilkie to take action. Chris Minns undid the good move of Dominic Perrettet.

Throw the duopoly out of office and put in a government that is going to act on gambling, inequity and climate change. That’s the Greens and teal independents.
