There is quite an interesting read, can’t remember the author’s name offhand, “The men who killed Qantas” .

Good example SSR, but no need to go so far. Here in Victoria we have the example of the disastrous (for consumers) privatisation of the SECV.

Exactly, why have a for profit company and a regulator looking over their shoulder? Just have the regulator run the thing

Hammo and his mates have taken us down the Thatcherite path for 50 yrs and they think they have the answers to the problems they created.
Why would govts not own a monopoly, he’s an economist, you’d think he likes efficiency. Instead of having a for profit company with admin and sales staff then a regulator telling them what to do, why not dispense with the for profit function and just have the regulator run the thing, isn’t that more efficient?

And yet the public service had some great regulatory bodies before neoliberalism smelt a profit, economic rationalism continues to strip the power of the people to self determine outcomes. Attacking privacy laws by using them to hide unreasonable behaviour especially in the public service is just one tactic.
As an aside the irony(ies) of that Chris Berg article was that if the European version of neoliberal politics is in charge of regulatory bodies it cannot be trusted. So in that sense he is right. The strategy to cast doubt on a regulatory body is an ongoing and worthwhile attack, when they’re toothless the job’s done and they really do deserve bagging then.
I haven’t searched for its current standard of operation from an objective source.

Because governments can’t regulate them properly it is too easy to gut the regulator at a donor/ lobbyists request via an accounting firm cooking books etc. Accounting firms should be barred from any work the public service once did., they have proven to be unscrupulous.

It’s easy to identify, Its the ones that smell off that provide a service which is worse than if used to be before privatising. The whole job finding sector is not suitable for privatisation
at all, neither are prisons, aged care should be majority publicly owned. Qantas is an obvious one .

You could privatise if the regulatory body could be trusted to not be fiddled with and the business behaved ethically, like find a ceo who was in it for the job satisfaction not the money. Capitalism and neoliberalism in partnership make that basically impossible.

If there was a big community owned outlet they would be singing it from the rooftops and the media oligarchs would headline “communists in our midst!!”, in capitals of course.
