Capitalism certainly qualifies as a cancer, even if metaphorically.

Exactly what you say. I remember finding a very helpful former Defence Housing tradie in Bunnings and he helped me find a mate of his to fix up a few problems that had occurred while my house was rented out for most of a decade. Two really practical, helpful people who knew exactly what was available and suitable for each problem. My timing was very lucky.

Someone should tell the jackal investment analysts that that’s not a sustainable model.

For old houses they often cant supply. I had one staff member openly boast that they dont keep parts for anything over 6 years old. As for staff knowledge. Forget it, they know no more about hardware than service station people know about cars, or service for that matter. For years I have been happy to pay more at Mitre 10, even if I have to order it and wait. Its important to keep alive whats left of the competitors.

Buy low, sell high. Retail price is double wholesale. Twisting their suppliers’ arms lowers quality as well. On the other hand, the places the builders go to they have an account, don’t check the prices, which are massive, and the quality is good. Broadly speaking.

You can’t really blame the individual businesses – it needs stronger government regulation.

Bunnings is not as national as you might think. On the Princes Highway, there is no Bunnings between Bateman’s Bay and Bairnsdale – a distance of 470 kilometres.

Biggest problem I find is the lack of knowledgable service

This is the biggest change. It used to be I could find a retired tradie on the staff who not only knew in which aisle the product resided, but willingly assisted me on its use and occasionally suggested a better solution to my problem.
