Comments on: ADF spent $60m on recruit advertising. Defence is quiet about whether it’s worked https://www.crikey.com.au/2024/09/04/adf-advertising-recruitment-defence/ On politics, media, business, the environment and life Sun, 08 Sep 2024 00:05:10 +0000 hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.4.5 By: Richard Harrison https://www.crikey.com.au/2024/09/04/adf-advertising-recruitment-defence/#comment-751076 Sun, 08 Sep 2024 00:05:10 +0000 https://www.crikey.com.au/?p=1173151#comment-751076 The ADF (unlike our AUKUS allies) has fairly stringent selection criteria to serve – they are not an employer of last resort. Young people with choices are going to be very sceptical of serving in an organisation that can’t punish war criminals, can’t manage budgets, and can’t look after people injured during their service. And then there is the tightening grip of the USA on the ADF – few young people would see the USA as a force for good anymore. The problems are NOT in spending on recruiting, the problem is that Defence Recruiting has no brand equity to work with.

LIVE A STORY WORTH TELLING*

*If you survive it and are then able to access services to process the trauma sufficiently to be able to speak about it at all.

The provision of safe sex education, free condoms and lube in clinics, gay bars etc was surely more materially effective in containing the spread of HIV than that grim reaper going bowling ad.

I used to run and hide behind the couch when that ad came on as a kid. I’m not sure if scaring children was at the heart of the campaign though.

One of the “downsides” of war and its atrocities getting so much more media coverage post-WWII.

The world of politicians have lost their marbles and they want our kids to pay for their weakness.

A pessimistic outlook would be “it’s great that the government is taking steps towards assuring our spot on Noah’s Arc”. On the negative, too bad “transparency” has been over marketed… sea levels continue to rise. I may be simplifying a complex problem/issue. I presume, most ADF staff are subject to clearance requirements. Some take that to heart. They generally either don’t make it far up the food chain, or are a suicide statistic. Or, on a bright note, some disengage…. I guess “a new creative account, currently the largest in Australia at a value of $10 million.” I guess that’s better than the economic cost of conscription…

Can’t recall the figure, but it was substantial considering the number of recruits that actually joined up. $60m is nothing.

If needed, I would have dissuade my children from joining . Fortunately none showed any inclination.
