Australians mostly see, and clearly, that defence includes the mainland, some clear strategic and diplomatic positions, some quite obvious last resort reasoning. Sending the vulnerable to far off lands to kill and destroy people and property in those lands is not defence. Many would have and instinct that it was murder, coercion, theft, violence, destruction. Uneasy thoughts, growing guilt would follow. Orders and attitudes would harden from above as other thoughts grow in those set up to obey blindly. Many would defend Darwin, but would recoil from killing in Kabul.

Survive “a story worth telling”? Perhaps the most effective recruitment drive for Defense would be to spend the $62million earmarked for such campaigns on implementing the recommendations from the Royal Commission into veteran suicides.

What I find utterly staggering is that the guy who oversaw the Veteran affairs ministry for nearly a decade, where a royal commission was needed to look into what was going on, which resulted in 770 recommendations, has the safest seat in the country. What was Darren Chester doing? What has he done for his own electorate for that matter? It is consistently in amongst the poorest in the land, but what has he done to lift it out of that grouping? All I can remember was him appearing on a Q&A showing a total lack of enthusiasm for windfarming in the area.

If this needs sensitive and intelligent handling one wonders if Marles is the man for the job. I assume others will do the thinking and write his scripts for him.
